We already have a Financial Controller. Do we need a Finance Director?

Illustrative responsibilities for financial control, Finance Director support, and the owners and board.

A Finance Director can help when your Financial Controller produces dependable numbers but the owners still carry the planning, commercial decisions and finance-team leadership. Start by agreeing which work needs a clearer owner. If reporting is late because the team lacks time, additional Controller or Management Accountant capacity may be the better first step.

Some Financial Controllers already handle substantial planning and commercial work. Understand their remit, experience and available time before adding another role.

Start with the gap in your current team

Ask which decisions are difficult today. Can the owners assess a price change, recruitment plan or expansion using an agreed forecast? Does someone turn monthly results into actions with department leaders? Who challenges assumptions when the plan changes?

Where that work falls to the founder or happens inconsistently, fractional Finance Director support may add value. Where the information itself needs repair, establish dependable financial control first. Our guide to CFO, Finance Director and Controller roles explains the broader distinctions.

Agree responsibilities with your Financial Controller

Build the arrangement with the existing team. The following is an illustrative split; responsibilities vary with the people and work involved.

Work Existing finance team Potential Finance Director contribution
Month end and reporting Prepare and review records, reconciliations and management accounts. Agree which information leadership needs and review the implications.
Budgets and forecasts Maintain the model and collect operating inputs. Lead planning discussions and challenge assumptions with the owners.
Performance reviews Explain movements and validate the underlying numbers. Connect results to commercial decisions and agreed actions.
Finance processes and capacity Run recurring processes and identify delivery problems. Help prioritise improvements, responsibilities and additional support.

Agree who prepares, reviews and approves each output. Keep decision authority and reporting lines clear so the Controller receives useful support and the owners know where accountability sits.

How a month could work

Once the agreed month-end close is complete, the Controller shares the management accounts and flags issues requiring attention. The FD reviews performance against plan and discusses the main movements with the Controller before the leadership meeting.

The team then updates the cash forecast and financial outlook using current operational assumptions. The FD helps the owners test the consequences of decisions such as hiring, changing prices or committing to new costs.

At the performance meeting, the discussion ends with named actions and review dates. Ahead of a quarterly board meeting, the FD and Controller agree what needs escalating, what decisions are required and who will prepare the supporting information. Allow time for preparation and follow-up as well as attendance.

When more delivery capacity is the better answer

An additional senior role may have limited value if the immediate constraint is unfinished reconciliations, overdue accounts or insufficient time to maintain forecasts. A Management Accountant may provide the missing preparation and analysis. More Controller capacity may be appropriate where review, controls and process ownership need attention.

Ask the Controller what would release their time or improve the quality of the output. Their answer may reveal a smaller, more useful intervention than the owners originally envisaged.

Define the scope before agreeing the allocation

Specify the recurring outputs, meetings, responsibilities and work retained internally. Separate any initial review or implementation work from the ongoing arrangement. If continuity is a priority, agree which processes will be documented and what absence cover is included. Our finance continuity guide gives a practical starting point.

Axcelera does not prepare annual accounts or provide tax advice. We can work alongside your existing accountant or introduce specialist partners to discuss those requirements. Our finance-support budget guide shows how role mix and delivery time affect cost.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Financial Controller report to the Finance Director?

That depends on the agreed arrangement. FD support can include team leadership, but you should define the reporting relationship, decision authority and responsibilities together.

How much FD time should we budget?

Axcelera’s Finance Director rate is £1,000 a day, excluding VAT. One or two days a month illustrates £1,000–£2,000 for agreed FD input. The allocation depends on the work, preparation and follow-up required; these figures are not a fixed package or a complete finance-function budget.

Can we keep our existing accountant?

Yes. We can agree how ongoing finance support connects with the accountant’s annual accounts and tax responsibilities, including the information and handovers each adviser needs.
